Student Support Services

Spark Learning Center and ArtSpace Charter School share resources and procedures for student support.

STUDENT SUPPORT TEAM

The Student Support Team addresses the specific needs of individual students who may be struggling with their academics and/or behavior. The team includes the child’s classroom teacher, school counselor, EC teacher, as well as tutors and administrators when applicable. The team reviews information provided by the teachers and parents and discusses strategies to help students achieve their full potential.

EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN’S PROGRAM

A free appropriate public education is the right of every child with a disability. Spark Learning Center provides Exceptional Children’s services to qualifying children with mental, physical, and emotional disabilities who are unable to benefit from a regular school program without special assistance. The Exceptional Children’s program strives to serve each child with a disability in the regular classroom using an inclusion model when possible.

In accordance with NC Law, a student may not be denied admission to Spark Learning Center solely on the basis that the student is a child with a disability. If a student is admitted to Spark, that student's IEP team or section 504 team, must plan for a successful student entry and accommodations necessary to provide for a free appropriate public education in the remote learning/hybrid setting.

COUNSELING PROGRAM

ArtSpace and Spark employ two full-time School Counselors for grades K-8. The School Counselor’s role is to promote the academic, personal/social and future success of all students. This is accomplished through individual and small group counseling, classroom guidance lessons, and program coordination. Individual counseling is short-term and focused primarily on school-related issues.

SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS

As per the McKinney-Vento all public schools must support the educational rights of homeless children.  For more information on support for students experiencing homelessness, contact the appointed Liaison in the main office.

TITLE IX

Spark Learning Center is committed to providing an environment free from all forms of sex discrimination, including sexual harassment and violence, as required by law. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 to the Civil Rights Act provides that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”  This policy and its associated procedures shall apply in all instances to prohibit and address allegations of such misconduct.
